The old part of Marrakech - Djema el Fna
Djema el Fna - that is the name of the most famous square in the
old town, the so-called medina, of the South-Moroccan city of
Marrakech. This square is so special that it was classified a
UNESCO world heritage site in 1985 with the whole old town. In
2001, the square was granted another UNESCO honour, when it was
listed in the oral and immaterial heritage of mankind.
Many even call the Djema el Fna the “most beautiful square
in Africa”. More specifically, this world heritage is the
central market square of Marrakech. What makes it so extraordinary
is the variety of human cultural products that are created there.
You can really talk about performative art. Here is the meeting
point of innumerable street traders coming from old desert peoples,
who offer their arts and craft, culinary delicacies, such as spices,
or traditional cloths and clothing. Especially in the evenings
countless artists assemble there. Musicians who play with the
traditional instruments of the Berbers and other desert peoples
want to enchant their auditors.
The snake charmer also knows this art, who has always fascinated
people with his centuries-old craft. The way the snake follows
his movements, was an incredible spectacle 1000 years ago - and
it still is. Acrobats and jugglers show their tricks, which would
be a real competition for qualified circus artists. It is also
fascinating to listen to the old story tellers. This art is handed
down over generations in some Berber families. The Djema el Fna
square has even been incorporated in great works of literature
by various authors, such as Elias Canetti (“The Voices of
Marrakech”), Bodo Kirchhoff (“Parlando”) or
Juan Goytisolo (“Makbara”).
