Marrakech is Morocco pure. Its ambience is very oriental and mysterious. Not without reason this Southern oasis town with its almost thousand year old history is described as "pearl from the south". Originally, it has been founded by a desert prince. It lies at the foot of the High Atlas which is covered with snow on its top all year round. Different sultan dynasties ruled over the town throughout the centuries, and that is why Marrakech is one of the renowned four royal towns. Numerous wonderful monuments from old times can be admired, like the famous Saadier sepulchres, the Kontoubia mosque with its impressive minaret, the symbol of Marrakech, the El Bahia and El Badi palaces, or the huge city wall. Not less interesting is the confusing labyrinth of narrow streets and alleys in the Medina with its countless shops, called Souks (the hotel manager will make a tour with you through the Medina, free of charge). At the entrance of this old part of town you will find the most famous of all places on the African continent: Djema el Fna. Every evening, thousands of people gather on this place. It is the social event of town, with storytellers, water-carriers, acrobats, travelling entertainers, snake-charmers and traders. |
