Interesting sights in Marrakech
Numerous wonderful testimonies of old times can be admired, such
as the famous tombs of the Saadians, the Kontoubia mosque with
its impressive minaret, the palaces El Bahia and El Badi or the
Ben Youssef Koranic school - Marrakech has many sights to visit.
First of all, the twelve kilometres of ancient city walls erected
in the 12th century will attract your attention. Numerous palm
trees, pines and cypresses round off the impression. However,
the city’s landmark is the Koutoubia mosque with its magnificent
minaret. This monument built in the 12th century can only be visited
and photographed from the outside.
Another highlight is the 400-years-old mosque Ben Youssef with
the Medrasa Ben Youssef (Koranic school) which has been restored
with much effort over the last years and has become a major attraction
of the old part of Marrakech.
Another impressive building - however not quite as old - is the
Bahia Palace, which was built around 1900 by a grand vizier. It
has more than 160 rooms, which can hardly be explored without
a guide. The courtyards stand out by the lush planted vegetation.
A very special experience is a visit to the camel market in Douar
Laaskar, about 5 kilometres from Marrakech. Here, people meet
to buy and sell their four-legged friends, and watching the hustle
and bustle is really amazing.
You shouldn’t miss a trip to the interior of Morocco. Lonely
areas, which could not be more paradise-like, fill the holiday-maker
with awe and admiration.
In numerous souks you can buy quite a variety of household objects
for daily use, and the tempting pastries let you enjoy the culinary
pleasures.
